It's absolutely criminal that, as far as I can tell (i.e. google) there exists no facility in the world designated a "cetacean communication station."

I mean it wouldn't even have to be anything particularly relating to marine mammals. I'd settle for a library or something.

welcome to nerd central
Pictochat is so great. It's like irc but in real life, sort of. And it's got the advantage of letting you draw pictures of extinct creatures1 and cosmological phenomena.2 It'd be nice if it had colors or a larger canvas, though.

I got a Spartan-3 Starter Board, XC3S1000 version. If anyone has any ideas as to what to actually do with it aside from making crude attempts at displaying rude swears on the 7-segment displays, I'd like to hear them.

To whom it may concern
Seeing as no less than two people have said they can't see purple tentacle in that last image I fucked with the levels etc in the gimp and made it show up a little better.

He shows up more-or-less fine in-game though. Chalk it up to difficulties in photographing the DS screen.

Tiniest Album Arts 2: Electric Boogaloo
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

New since yesterday is the second row there (The Coast is Never Clear, Last Splash, The Three EPs) and the first on the bottom row (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea).

Previously unseen on LJ but not new are Max, Purple Tentacle, and Stan up on the top row.

Not pictured: my town flag, which is that green smiley thing from HHGG.

The Tiniest Album Arts
So earlier today screwtape (thristian) pasted the url to a cool little DSotM cover that had been pixelized. That album more or less wore out its welcome with me about five years ago,1 but damned if I didn't like that little icon. Seems the thing was cooked up by the dude who does Diesel Sweeties--you can find said dude's blog post about it here.

Anyway, as usual, I immediately stole the idea for my own uses. I've been playing quite a bit of Animal Crossing: Wild World on the DS lately and the little designs you can make in-game to use as carpet or wallpaper or hats or whatever struck me as the perfect medium for this particular kind of artistic expression. Fast forward several hours and you have these:

Left to right those are my crudely-rendered versions of Moon Safari, Rio, Dots and Loops, Daydream Nation, and Turn on the Bright Lights.

Being limited by the different in-game palettes, some concessions had to be made, but on the whole I think they turned out pretty cool.

I also translated the Rio one into straight-up png so I could paste it to the folks on irc, before deciding that it would be much easier to just take a picture of the stuff on my DS.2

I'm going to make more, but the stupid clothing store where you design them closes at 11, so it'll have to wait 'till tomorrow.

1: piper rules dark side drools
2: Which turned out to be horribly incorrect, as I had to try 3 different cameras--one borrowed--and untold lighting conditions and hand-stabilizers to get a decent shot, and then, to get the images off the CF card, I had to deal with installing scp on my zaurus (the only device I own which reads CF) even though it really should have been there already, which took a few tries due to linking errors.

Clarence Thomas has a posse
God, if Thomas can keep this sort of shit up, I'm going to have to make some sort of t-shirt in support of him. His dissent in the Oregon assisted suicide decision isn't so much a dissent as it is a giant middle finger to all the judges who said yes to this one but no to medical marihuana in Raich.

The dissent/bitchslap is only 4 pages long and a pretty entertaining read, I suggest everyone have a look. If you haven't read his Raich dissent that's worth checking out too, but you can get the basic idea from quotes like this:

Respondents Diane Monson and Angel Raich use marijuana that has never been bought or sold, that has never crossed state lines, and that has had no demonstrable effect on the national market for marijuana. If Congress can regulate this under the Commerce Clause, then it can regulate virtually anything--and the Federal Government is no longer one of limited and enumerated powers.

and this:
If the majority is to be taken seriously, the Federal Government may now regulate quilting bees, clothes drives, and potluck suppers throughout the 50 States. This makes a mockery of Madison's assurance to the people of New York that the "powers delegated" to the Federal Government are "few and defined," while those of the States are "numerous and indefinite."

So after a couple of weeks and 7 games, I'm convinced the DS is the best thing to happen to consoles since like the SNES.

Why are pro-traditional-marriage legislators so anti-traditional-marriage? Do they, perhaps, hate freedom???

Cramming for court
Several Republicans, including Mr. Specter, said they steered clear of asking Ms. Miers questions about constitutional law. Mr. Specter, who said the timing of the confirmation hearings would depend in part on when Ms. Miers feels ready, said he initiated a discussion of the shifting standards the Supreme Court has applied in interpreting the Commerce Clause of the Constitution, but only to illustrate to Ms. Miers the kinds of questions she would face during her hearings. "I did not ask her about it because I don't think she's ready to face it at the moment," he said. "Look, the lady was White House counsel dealing with totally other subjects until Sunday night when the president offered her the job. And Monday she's sitting with me. I'm not going to ask her questions which she hasn't had a chance to study or reflect on."

Let me tell you, nothing fills me with confidence in this country like the fact that the latest appointee to the highest court in the land subscribes to the psionicman school of studying.

Fun for the whole family
I invented a new game in San Andreas. It's called Dead Hooker Juggling and basically how you play is you get in a car and run over a hooker in such a way that she flies into the air and lands on your car. You then see how far you can drive around before she falls off. Bonus points are awarded if you drop the hooker in the path of an incoming trolley in SF.

Someone on IRC claims to have invented this before, but it's a widely-believed fact that everyone on IRC is a pathological liar.

Edit: Just after I wrote this I dropped a hooker in the path of a trolley but before it got there another hooker ran over to the corpse to gawk. Result: two birds, one stone. I'm pretty sure that means I win.

I can't stop listening to Beauty and the Beat. The last album to grab me like this was Ta det lugnt. This probably means that, like that album, I'll break down and actually buy the damn thing sooner or later.
What kind of nonsense is that? It's getting closer to 2006 every day and still I find a need to exchange money for services and/or goods. Some future this has turned out to be. Don't even get me started on the flying cars or lack thereof.

Eye technology
Apparently people can see the polarization of light.

That's pretty cool and it makes me wish I could find the two bits of polarizing plastic film I had lying around here somewhere.

Too bad we're still light-years behind those damned mantis shrimp.
